About the roles

Senior Solicitor role – 6 month fixed term

In this role you will primarily provide advice to MBIE's Business Integrity Services Branch. That Branch's mission is to help grow New Zealand for all by ensuring the quality and integrity of New Zealand's corporate registers, intellectual property rights, insolvency and trustee services, and management of criminal proceeds.  The Branch includes the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (IPONZ), the New Zealand Insolvency and Trustee Service, and the Companies Office.

Solicitor role - permanent

In this role you will assist more senior counsel, and advise on and appear in proceedings before a variety of licensing boards, Tribunals, and Courts on civil and criminal matters arising in relation to the broad range of enforcement activities across MBIE. These include deportation appeals in the Immigration and Protection Tribunal, enforcement of minimum employment standards in the Employment Relations Authority, disciplinary complaints before occupational licensing boards, and enforcement of penalties, prosecutions and appeals in the District Court on matters ranging from immigration, to licensed building work, and residential tenancies.

 

Skills and experience

To be successful in the roles, you will need to have the following:

  • A tertiary qualification in law and a practising certificate
    • A solid understanding of the mechanisms of government, including regulatory compliance and enforcement, or a desire to learn about them
    • Strong legal technical skills
    • Well-developed written and verbal communication abilities, which allow you to convey key ideas and issues in a way that is suitable to the audience
    • Strong relationship management skills and an ability to work well with others
    • Enthusiasm, drive and a proactive nature 

 

The senior role also requires:

  • Experience in public law and/or working in the commercial, company and/or insolvency sector
  • The ability to lead assignments and to coach and mentor other team members
