Economic Development + Transitions – Investment Policy
One Year Fixed Term
Wellington or Auckland
Salary Range $100,000 - $132,000)
Full time or Part Time .7 FTE
- Shape development of new Investment Attraction Strategy (targeting high quality foreign direct investment for a more productive, sustainable, and inclusive economy).
- Support senior Ministers driving the Strategy
- Engage and manage diverse stakeholders
The Economic Development and Transitions | EDT branch of MBIE is responsible for a range of Economic Development policy functions, including:
- Investment Policy
- Industry Policy
- Enterprise Policy and
- Just Transition Partnerships
The Investment Policy Team provides advice to Ministers on business investment to support economic development and has joint policy oversight for New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (investment) and New Zealand Growth Capital Partners.
We play a leading role in supporting the right investment settings and markets to bring the right kind of investors and lenders together with successful New Zealand businesses looking for finance to grow further. Our work includes understanding changing capital markets and how to influence shifts in investment towards new or undercapitalised sectors or firms, to realise our goals of productivity, sustainability and inclusivity
We work together with a diverse range of stakeholders, both private and public, to lead and co-ordinate the broad Government investment work programme.
About the role:
The Senior Advisor helps enable Investment Policy's three priorities:
- Investment Attraction
- Improving SME Access to Finance
- Supporting early-stage Capital Markets
This role is to support (and at times lead) the development of the forthcoming Investment Attraction Strategy (targeting high quality foreign direct investment that contributes to a more productive, sustainable, and inclusive economy). This role involves both strategic and practical ideas and advice.
On a daily basis you would build relationships amongst key stakeholders (especially from New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and MBIE's Innovative Partnerships), consider a wide range of views on the latest investment attraction thinking, and provide recommendations to Ministers that are both principled and practical.
The fixed-term is to cover parental leave, and the position could be focused exclusively on the strategy for a part-timer, or scoped more expansively for a full-timer. Either way the job is to connect well with other people and priorities in the Investment Policy Team, and with stakeholders
You are likely to have experience in sometimes complex policy formulation and possibly also in investment policy and economics. Your well-practiced skill set and work style should work in harmony with our team.
- Broad ranging knowledge and ideally some experience in economics, finance and/or investment policy environments
- Strategic knowledge of formulating policy advice for Ministers
- Experience with stakeholder engagement & management
- Ability to think critically and put forward a well-argued case
- A good tertiary qualification
