On behalf of the Minister of Energy and Resources, the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment, is seeking applications from candidates who are interested in bringing their extensive skills and experience to the role of Chair of the Electricity Authority Board.
The Electricity Authority is responsible for the governance and regulation of the electricity sector. The Authority's objective is to promote competition in, reliable supply by, and efficient operation of, the electricity market for the long-term benefit of consumers.
The Minister of Energy and Resources is seeking a visionary leader with ability to champion and manage change at a system level and the skills necessary to steward the sector towards a zero carbon future for New Zealand by 2050.
Candidates for the Board Chair role must have a high level of personal mana and the presence required to act as the external face and champion of the Electricity Authority. The ideal candidate will also possess the ability to build and maintain strong credibility with the industry, consumers and other stakeholders, and a solid understanding of the political landscape, particularly with regard to the electricity sector.
The ideal candidate must also possess extensive skills and experience in the following areas:
- Governance and leadership, ideally within the public sector and as a Chair.
- Knowledge of regulatory issues, such as regulatory compliance, regulatory systems management, and rule making.
- Stakeholder / relationship management and the ability to build trust and confidence.
Experience in the electricity sector, the operation of large commercial entities, and in major infrastructure projects would also be useful.

Candidates will be expected to have a genuine interest in the work of the Electricity Authority as well as the motivation and availability needed to be able to effectively carry out the duties of an Electricity Authority Board Chair.

The Minister is required to first publicise, and consider all nominations, for roles on the Board prior to making recommending a person for appointment in accordance with Section 13 (3) of the Electricity Industry Act 2010.
This is a contestable process and applications will be assessed according to the skills and experience the Electricity Authority Board requires at this particular time.
