About our MBIE Policy Community
MBIE has a diverse range of policy, regulatory and service delivery responsibilities that help build the economic success of New Zealand. Our purpose is “grow New Zealand for all” and our work makes a difference to many aspects of New Zealanders' daily lives. This work is all the more important in the post COVID-19 environment as we work towards key government priorities. There couldn't be a better time to join us and make an impact!
MBIE is the lead advisor on tourism to the Government. The Tourism branch coordinates across the tourism system to ensure the current and future settings are productive, sustainable, inclusive and resilient. We are responsible for influencing policy across the public service to drive system change, as well as maintaining the significant government investment in the tourism portfolio. We work with regions to shape the destination management plans developed by regions and identified projects.
The Tourism sector is diverse and ranges from a few large multinational organisations through to many small and seasonal operators. The Tourism sector has been significantly impacted by the closure of our border to international visitors. While this is a challenging time for the wider tourism sector, it is an interesting time to reset tourism in New Zealand. Our team are implementing the $400m Tourism Recovery Package and working closely with the Tourism Futures Taskforce. We are most successful when we work with industry and communities to implement practical solutions to resolve major strategic problems as we have done with visitor levies, resolving freedom camping issues and helping communities deal with tourism growth.

Our Senior Policy Advisors work across different levels to learn from experts and share their own knowledge with others. With the wide variety of work across the different policy areas, there are numerous development opportunities to grow and build their careers within MBIE.
