  • Newly created unique commercially focused Director role within Tourism, Sectors, Regions & Cities
  • Lead and work across MBIE, DOC and others departments on visitors destination planning
  • Great opportunity to contribute to New Zealand's economy and regional development

About the role

The tourism sector makes a critical contribution to New Zealand's economic success. International visitor arrivals to New Zealand have experienced growth of 35 per cent in the last five years and this growth is predicted to continue.  At the same time, domestic visitor numbers have also been increasing.  This has created both opportunities and challenges.

We have therefore made the decision to create a position of a Tourism Investment Director to work on establishing a system for destination planning, and tourism investment building on the work of MBIE, DoC and others in the Tourism sector. This necessitates taking a whole of government perspective, integrating work across agencies to ensure there is deliberate and cohesive approach to our stewardship of the tourism system. As such the role will work across both agencies and existing work programmes to ensure we have a strategic plan fitting into NZ's Tourism Strategy, regional growth priorities and sustainable management of our natural and historic resources.

Key responsibilities and deliverables

This role would involve;

  • Deliver a 4 year (medium term) investment strategy, prioritising tourism investments and sequencing.
  • Provide clear guidance on where we should be investing and why and how it supports the sector's broader goals.
  • Work across both agencies and existing work programmes ensuring suitability with NZ's tourism strategy and regional growth priorities; as well as looking at broader and longer term economic impacts on the sector; such as the transition to a low emissions economy and the sustainable management of natural and historic resources

To be considered for the role, you will need to have;

  • Demonstrated senior commercial experience with a proven track record of success in the tourism sector, and managing complex programmes.
  • Proven strong strategic focus, with the ability to quickly identify risks and opportunities.
  • Proven ability to influence at very senior levels, both within government and within industry.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the multiple government interests in the programme, recognising the focus on both social and economic outcomes
  • An understanding of the priorities of industry and business – with a demonstrated track record of successfully working with industry
  • The ability to translate goals into a programme of action and effectively manage progress towards those goals
  • The understanding and experience to bring both policy and operational perspectives to bear on the programme
  • Strong relationship-building skills and proven people-management skills.
