  • Do you want an opportunity to focus on the big opportunities to grow New Zealand for all?
  • Do you know the difference between an LP and a GP? Between VC and PE?
  • Be part of a team that advises on supporting businesses to grow, both domestically and internationally.

About us

Our purpose is to grow the New Zealand economy to provide a better standard of living for all New Zealanders.

Our group – Labour, Science and Enterprise – works with people, businesses, regions, and the science, innovation and education systems to help the country and New Zealanders to be successful.  We work closely with businesses, other ministries, regulators, overseas governments and international organisations.

About the opportunity

An opportunity has come up to join our team as a Policy Advisor within the Enterprise policy team. The focus of the role initially will be on how to deepen New Zealand's early-stage capital markets in order for our promising innovative start-ups to continue to grow.

The team has a wide span from strategic policy to operations. It covers the development of strategic policy on business development, including: leadership of policy advice on early stage capital markets, business management skills and firm internationalisation, NZTE-related policy, servicing of the Small Business portfolio and management of the Prime Minister's Business Scholarships.

About the role

Enterprise policy sits at the very heart of economic development. We design policies that influence firms to undertake more growth-enabling activities. This helps firms and the economy to grow, leading to higher incomes and more meaningful work for New Zealanders.

Enterprise policy engages widely with other policy and operational teams within MBIE and across government. Our policies help firms to seek external advice on firm performance, to initiate and deepen their international connectedness through exporting and investment, to gain access to finance, to innovate, and to strengthen their management capability with the goal of lifting productivity and competitiveness.

Our work is varied. One moment your advice could be supporting the next hot startup to raise its first capital round, then you could be identifying the best New Zealand talent to spend time at an international business school, while thinking about the best way for a large New Zealand firm to enter a new export market, and then advising on the business support that may be needed to respond to the latest ex-tropical cyclone to roll over the country!

Who we're looking for

As a generalist policy professional, you can apply your skills across a range of policy problems. In particular, we value:

  • Strategic thinking, including the ability to generate new frameworks and come up with new approaches
  • Intellectual curiosity and a track record of ‘following your nose' to find, and solve, complex policy problems
  • Good advisory skills, including experience of advising Ministers or senior decision-makers
  • The ability to deliver high quality work with limited supervision
  • The ability to take on and lead projects across agencies

We would welcome those with an economics background who are looking to translate their skills into the real world.
