The Science System Investment and Performance branch makes, manages and assesses investments in significant science assets ad platforms to meet New Zealand's economic, social and environmental goals. The Science Leadership team is responsible for ensuring that science investments deliver excellence and impact for New Zealand and for oversight of the capabilities of the science system. 


About the Role

This is a great opportunity to get involved in initiatives that support government goals in improving environment, social and economic outcomes through investments in New Zealand's science system. 

We are a small team that provides oversight of a range science investments and leads the branch's stewardship of the science system. This influential role will see you working across the science system, tapping into existing networks and forming new relationships with business and research organisations, government agencies, industry and sectors in order to better understand their perspectives.

As a Senior Investment Manager you will work with the Chief Scientist and the Departmental Science Advisors to provide scientific leadership   :

  • Support the branch's stewardship of the sector building a high level picture of linkages, gaps and opportunities ensuring understanding of science sector interests and intelligence are captured and communicated
  • Work with policy teams, in particular Science Policy, to ensure that scientific knowledge is drawn on in the policy process and in the development of investment plans
  • Support the branch to build its capability across process and investment management work.


Our work programme is focussed on a number of strategic projects related to New Zealan's science system:

  • Lead work on Vision Mātauranga
  • Develop thought pieces on matters related to delivery of excellence and impact
  • Assess the performance of areas of investment and their impact


Who are we looking for?

  • Broad knowledge of the New Zealand science system or an appreciation of the role science in building New Zealand's future
  • Experience in development of strategy and its implementation
  • Experience in science contract management and performance reporting
  • Working knowledge of government
  • Strong thinking, planning, influencing and relationship management skills
  • Some sector knowledge across economic, environment or social sectors desirable
  • Experience in policy development desirable.
