The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is a Ministry formed from the merger of four government agencies its purpose is to be a catalyst for a high performing economy to secure the lasting prosperity and wellbeing of all New Zealanders.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Domain Architect (Data) to join our Ministry in the Technology, Strategy and Architecture team within ICT.


As the Domain Architect (Data) you will:

  • formulate and promote the strategic direction and associated roadmaps of the Data domain including helping with ongoing investment decisions;
  • create and maintain the Data domain standards & guidelines, technical reference architectures and design patterns;
  • provide Data domain architectural governance and oversight.
  • The Domain Architect (Data) role is primarily responsible for building the strategic direction and expressing the enterprise vision for the data and information that supports business outcomes. The Domain Architect ensures that data and information can be managed as a strategic asset, is transparent, trusted, accessible and available to deliver business value. They are a major contributor in the definition of domain solutions for the Ministry that meets business needs and complies with the Government standards.


Your key responsibilities will include but will not limited to:

  • Contribute domain special knowledge into the day to day work of the architects' team.
  • Define standards for naming, describing, governing, managing, modelling, cleansing, enriching, transforming, moving, storing, searching, and delivering all data within the enterprise
  • Serve as the liaison between data consumer representatives, data solution development, integration, and governance teams
  • Inform and interpret data project sponsors
  • Understand how data is, or will be, used and the implications on people, processes, products and technology
  • Delivery of ICT services, products and programmes that actively support and contribute to the achievement of the Ministry's outcomes and that deliver to the needs of internal and external stakeholders


To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Extensive technical experience in data architecture
  • Strong understanding of software project management approaches and requirements, system development lifecycle, and design and test techniques.
  • Proven knowledge of database design and modelling
  • Good analytical and logical thinking skills
  • A solid background in datawarehousing and business intelligence
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to form trusted relationships and communicate to different stakeholder levels.


In addition it is desirable to have experience with the following:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent knowledge, skills, and experience; and a commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Industry certification in area of solutions domain speciality (e.g. data modelling tools and methodologies, data warehouse and business intelligence tools and technologies, analystics, software development lifecycle) or relevant and proven experience.
