This is a chance to provide policy advice in an area that shapes the way New Zealanders live, work and play. 


About the opportunity 

  • Do you want to provide advice as to how New Zealand can lift the economic performance of our urban areas?
  • Do you have an interest in understanding what drives the performance of cities and enables urban development?
  • Do you want to be involved in supporting and shaping government-led urban development initiatives?
  • Do you want to advise the government on how it can build 100,000 affordable houses in the next ten years?
  • Are you, or do you want to be, based in Auckland?


About you 

You are a highly capable senior policy advisor looking to advance your career by working on complex, challenging and high priority issues.  You will be looking to work within a high performing policy area with a supportive culture.

You will enjoy analysing challenging problems and finding solutions that make a difference in people's lives.  You work well with others, deliver, and can present to senior people including Ministers.

You may have experience in economic development policy and working in, or with, Government.  You may be a systems thinker or somebody who understands the dynamics of urban form.


You'll be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience leading complex central government policy projects
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Experience (and a high degree of comfort) dealing with ambiguity
  • Proven ability to communicate with influence
  • Ability to lead and mentor other analysts
  • A relevant tertiary qualification, in a discipline relevant to policy, social science, economics, or property development.

The Housing and Urban Branch is a vibrant environment where the team really cares about what we're trying to achieve. The HUB sits within MBIE, and aims to improve housing outcomes, shape rental markets, enable urban development and lift the contribution from our urban areas to New Zealand's long term success.  This includes advising within a new Ministerial portfolio – Housing and Urban Development.


Our policy interests range from:

  • Improving  the experience for  renters
  • Improving housing outcomes for all New Zealanders, including access, choice, affordability and liveability
  • Enabling large scale urban development and urban growth
  • Lifting the overall performance of New Zealand's urban areas


About the work 

We have a number of high priority projects to deliver advice on.  These include:

  • Shape the policy and legislative settings that enable growth in urban areas
  • Helping shape new infrastructure funding and financing tools to ensure change in urban areas
  • Responding to climate change driven from urban areas
  • Advising on economic growth and innovation in New Zealand's cities
  • Provide cross-portfolio, urban-focused policy advice to influence government actions on housing and urban development, integrated transport and land-use planning, infrastructure, economic development and other areas
