Based in Mangere, Auckland, the Refugee Quota Branch is responsible for the Refugee Quota and the Refugee Family Support Category Policies.

 

The objective of the Refugee Quota Policy is to provide protection for United National High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) referred refugees in line with New Zealand's national, international and humanitarian obligations and commitments.  

 

We are looking for a skilled Quota Immigration Officer to join our team who is dynamic, flexible, has excellent relationship management skills and is able to multi-task. The Quota immigration Officer will contribute to the operation of the Refugee Quota Branch team and will be responsible for quality and timely decisions in relation to the selection, assessment, and resettlement of refugees mandated by UNHCR and family reunification cases.

 

The Quota Immigration Officer will also be expected to case manage and interview complex refugee referrals, assess applications assigned by the manager and make quality decisions under all streams processed but the Refugee Quota Branch.

 

Skills and experience required:

  • Understand the purpose and definitions within the Refugee Convention and UNHCR Settlement Guidelines
  • Have experience of working as a decision maker and writing good quality decisions
  • Have experience with working with UNHCR
  • Be an excellent relationship manager
  • Be able to interview candidates using appropriate sensitivity and investigative techniques to ascertain both documentary and informational authenticity
  • Be prepared to travel overseas to interview refugees for New Zealand's Quota Intake
  • Undertake assessment and make decisions on immigration applications
  • Be able to apply robust analysis and judgement to high risk/high value immigration applications/registrations; and make quality recommendations or decisions in accordance with the principles of fairness and natural justice and understanding of immigration outcomes
  • Report as required, with monthly reports to be made on progress in achieving planned results.

 

All applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents and are willing to undergo, gain and maintain the required security clearance.
