Why work for MBIE?

We are here to grow New Zealand for all. Our goal is to create a strong and high performing economy without compromising the integrity of our environment and the safety of our workplaces.

The Science System Investment and Performance branch makes, manages and assesses investments in significant science assets ad platforms to meet New Zealand's economic, social and environmental goals. The Specialised Investments team is responsible for making, managing and reviewing investments resulting in capabilities and institutions to build science.

About the Role

This is a great opportunity to get involved in initiatives that support government goals in improving environment, social and economic outcomes through investments in New Zealand's science system.

We are a small busy team responsible for a number of diverse science investments. This influential role will see you working across the science system, tapping into existing networks and forming new relationships with third party funding organisations, business and research organisations, government agencies, industry and sectors in order to better understand what their perspectives are.

As a Senior Investment Manager the focus of this role is on science infrastructure investments (see SSIF Investment Plan), and the delivery of science investments by third party funders. You will utilise your contract management expertise and sector knowledge to:

  • Manage investment and contracting relationships to contribute to smart funding decisions;
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of investments;
  • Contribute to or lead constructive and informed relationships across New Zealand's science system.

Our work programme is focussed on specialised science investments that build new capabilities across New Zealand's science system:

  • Strategic Science Investment Fund (SSIF) infrastructure investments.
  • Science in Society investments (that support the objective of “A Nation of Curious Minds”)
  • Oversight of the delivery of science investments by third party funders (e.g. Health Research Council and the Royal Society of New Zealand)
  • Envirolink fund

Who are we looking for?

  • Broad knowledge of the New Zealand science system or an appreciation of the role science in building New Zealand's future
  • Experience in setting priorities, analysing business cases and making recommendations on where funding is invested
  • Experience in science contract management and performance reporting
  • Working knowledge of government
  • Strong thinking, planning, influencing and relationship management skills
  • Some sector knowledge across economic, environment or social sectors desirable
  • Experience in working with senior leadership teams and governance boards (desirable).

Diversity is highly valued and managers work hard to ensure that staff are given opportunities to develop their skills and expertise. We work collaboratively within the branch and with others in MBIE, other Government agencies, and stakeholders.
