The Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE) ICT branch provides valued services to our business customers.  Under the leadership of a new CIO we have recently undergone an operating model and structure change in order to lift our service delivery, increase the value we get for IT spend, and ensure we are ready to navigate an ever-changing digital world.  As a result of these changes we have a number of new roles to fill.  


About the role

Reporting to the Principal Commercial and Contracts Manager, these positions will assist in leading the management of ICT vendors with the purpose of deriving the commercial and economic performance from our contracts with suppliers.

The Commercial and Contracts Manager takes responsibility for assigned contracts, monitoring performance, costs and contract compliance. They manage ICT suppliers through the supplier life cycle from contract negotiation to contract end. They focus on improving supplier performance, value for money and deriving savings.

The role will manage the ICT contract and vendor management activities, underpinned by a sophisticated understanding of MBIE's current and future spend. 


Commercial & Contract Manager will:


  • Work with the Principal Commercial & Contracts Manager to define cost and charging models
  • Provide commercial assistance in ICT procurement activities including contract negotiations, contract variations and contract reviews
  • Ensures lessons learnt from reviews are documented and promoted with colleagues, stakeholders and the organisation.
  • Support the development and implementation of frameworks that measure how services are developed.
  • Support the development and implementation of processes and tools to create benchmarking
  • Actively manage the economics of supply arrangements by driving savings through rationalisation and optimisation of those arrangements.


Skills and experience

  • Some knowledge and 2+ years' experience in commercial contract management
  • Demonstrated experience in ICT commercial contract management
  • Exposure to analysing, reviewing and critiquing proposed statements of work and other contractual documentation to identify compliance, completeness and accuracy issues
  • Demonstrated ability to work with vendors and internal stakeholders to gain best outcomes
  • A working knowledge of the legal frameworks in which the contract resides
  • Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written particularly business writing and reporting



  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent knowledge, skills, and experience
