We have a full-time, fixed-term (one year) role in the Engagement, Communications and Ministerial Services branch within the Corporate Governance and Information group of MBIE.

We are looking for a senior marketing and communications professional to work in a small quality-driven team, supporting MBIE's Maori Economic Development Unit (MEDU) to provide marketing, communications and engagement advice, campaign and events management support to MEDU and across MBIE in a Maori cultural context.

You will:

  • work with the Maori Economic Development Unit (MEDU) and marketing and communications colleagues to create, tailor and deliver integrated communications, engagement and marketing activity
  • provide advice and guidance to support stakeholder engagement needs associated with MEDU's programme of work
  • support MEDU staff to provide advice and guidance to the wider business on good Maori engagement practice
  • provide advice and guidance on the delivery of communications for a range of internal and external audiences to support MEDU's work
  • work with colleagues to brief, procure and coordinate internal and external suppliers to deliver customer focused events and campaigns 
  • be involved in a diverse range of projects working at strategic and tactical levels across the range of Ministry activity.


About the team

Communications and Engagement plays a vital role in the public sector and our team supports staff across MBIE  both on internal and external work streams. As well as communications and engagement, we draw on the support of specialists in social media, sponsorship, event management, design and digital services. The diversity of the projects we are involved in means that no two days are the same.


Skills and experience

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • 5-7 years of experience in the development and implementation of communications and engagement strategies and plans, and in the writing and delivery of appropriate and audience focused products
  • demonstrable experience of working with Māori culture, people, networks and language in a communications and engagement role, preferably in another government agency or agencies; and good knowledge of Maori communication networks
  • proven ability to take a strategic, proactive approach in the management of reputation issues, internal and external communications and stakeholder engagement.
  • proven ability to identify and understand internal and external customer needs and adapt style and language to meet them.
  • proven ability to actively engage with a broad range of internal stakeholders in shaping communication approaches.
  • proven track record in delivering high-quality integrated engagement, communications and marketing campaigns.
  • excellent project management/event planning experience and skills and ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
  • experience in using a wide range of traditional and digital channels to affect consumer behaviour.
  • excellent written and oral presentation skills, creative flair and an eye for detail.
  • ability to manage internal and external providers and convey feedback constructively
  • A strong working knowledge of te Reo would be an asset.
