  • Challenging roles for exceptional policy advisors, senior policy advisors and principal policy advisors
  • Be a part of a forward thinking and commercially savvy Ministry whose focus is on shaping and delivering a strong economy.
  • Live and Work in New Zealand's vibrant capital city, Wellington

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) plays a central role in shaping and delivering a strong New Zealand economy. We are a large organisation and our work is challenging and varied so MBIE can offer you significant opportunities for developing your career across a broad variety of areas.

MBIE is one of the country's largest and most influential public sector agencies.  We employ more policy people than anyone else in New Zealand and we're responsible for a diverse range of policy areas.

Exciting and challenging work

We play a big role in shaping the New Zealand of tomorrow by developing innovative solutions to complex issues. We tackle all sorts of questions; things like:

  • How do we deal with housing supply and affordability?
  • What's the best way to support New Zealand businesses to become more internationally competitive?
  • How can we make sure the benefits of economic growth are widely shared?
  • How do we build a nation with a thriving digital technology sector?

As a senior or principal advisor you'll provide intellectual leadership on cutting edge public policy issues affecting all New Zealanders.

How we work

We have a great team culture. We work hard, and we have fun. We like to work collaboratively and nut things out together. We put a lot of focus on talking to our stakeholders, and understanding what is actually happening in the market. We make sure everyone in the team has the opportunity to lead pieces of work and attend meetings with the Minister.

Developing our policy staff is a key focus for MBIE.  We aim to create a culture where policy staff are empowered to bring fresh perspectives and to be innovative.

With our large policy capability, MBIE offers significant opportunity for developing experience across a broad variety of areas. We encourage excellence and proactively support development through on-the-job learning and a mix of training courses, study opportunities, conferences and seminars, development programmes, and secondments and rotations to other branches.

Who we are looking for

At MBIE we look for passionate people with diverse perspectives and backgrounds, who love an intellectual challenge and want to create a better New Zealand for our people.

We are keen to hear from you if you are a policy professional considering a move to New Zealand – especially if you are already working at senior or principal level.

What you'll be doing

As a Principal Policy Advisor your role will be challenging - you will have plenty of latitude to use your intellectual leadership to drive projects and help shape the future direction of the work programme of your team and the branch. While Principals do not generally have formal direct reports, principal advisors have responsibility for overseeing staff assigned to specific projects and for coaching and mentoring to help build the capability of the Ministry.

As a Senior Policy Advisor you will need to be able to think broadly and strategically across a wide range of issues and apply critical thinking and analytical skills to challenge the status quo.  You'll have the opportunity to develop, lead and deliver significant public policy projects and develop fit for purpose solutions to difficult issues.   This means you'll need sophisticated interpersonal skills and political nouse, with the ability to influence a wide range of audiences.
