Our Structure

The Senior Geotechnical Engineer position reports into the Team Leader Engineering in the Building Performance and Engineering Team in the Building, Resources and Markets group.

The functions in this group are:

  • Building System Performance
  • Commerce, Consumers and Communications
  • Energy and Resource Markets
  • Construction and Housing Markets
  • Business Management

The Building System Performance branch is the government's lead advisor on the building regulatory system. It provides policy and technical advice on the building system, performance standards, and the implementation of regulations for the built environment. The branch has a stewardship role, defining roles and responsibilities within the building regulatory system and ensuring the strong performance of the system.

Position purpose

The Senior Geotechnical Engineer will provide expert geotechnical engineering advice to support work across MBIE on complex issues in relation to the Building Code, compliance documents, standards development, policy and determinations.

Personal specifications

  • Tertiary qualification in geotechnical engineering or similar
  • Substantial experience in geotechnical engineering and a reputation as an expert in this field
  • Excellent knowledge of the Building Act and Code
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills, effective business and technical writing skills
  • Ability to quickly assimilate new information or areas of work
  • Can-do attitude
  • Ability to quickly establish and build strong working relationships
  • Ability to provide specialist geotechnical advice in a clear manner
  • Good communication skills- able to share knowledge clearly
  • Proven ability to develop trust and credibility with managers and staff
    • Understanding of where the team fits in delivering outcomes for the Ministry
    • Ability to integrate and balance statutory and specialist technical information and present them with simplicity and clarity that can be understood by a range of audiences
    • Ability to think through ambiguous and conflicting requirements and solve problems pragmatically, effectively and promptly
    • Ability to play a key role in a self-motivated, high-performing, professionally respected, multi-disciplinary technical team
