As part of the Corporate Governance and Information Group the Legal Branch is responsible for providing a centre of legal advice leadership and expertise for the Ministry, and an exemplar of best practice for both the public service and the wider New Zealand labour and business markets. 


About the role:

This role will be part of the Commercial Legal team in the Legal Branch. This role is for an experienced property lawyer. The successful candidate will be involved in a variety of work including providing operational and strategic legal advice on a range of property related transactions. The work will include advice on the Public Works Act, the Reserves Act, the Housing Act, rights of first refusal treaty settlement legislation, property tenure, construction contracts, agreements for sale and purchase of land and other related contracts for both corporate property and affordable housing developments.

We are looking for a confident solicitor to join our in-house Commercial Legal team to provide robust legal advice and support to business units across the Ministry. You'll have property law experience and have a genuine desire to learn more. This is a unique and varied role and would suit solicitors with an interest in both regulatory and commercial law, who have an inquisitive nature, are comfortable communicating with people at all levels and who have a keen appreciation of New Zealand's business and commercial environment.  


To be successful in this role you will have the following:

  • A tertiary qualification in law and a current practising certificate.
  • Experienced property lawyer
  • A solid understanding of the mechanisms of government or a desire to learn them.
  • Strong legal technical skills.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication abilities, which will allow you to convey key messages and ideas or simplify complex issues suitable to the audience.
  • Have the ability to quickly establish, build and maintain strong working relationships.  
  • Be highly motivated and have enthusiasm, drive and a proactive nature.
