  • How do building regulations look through the eyes of an engineer?
  • Lead from the front and help MBIE realise it's ambition to be a world-leading building system regulatory steward
  • Expressions of interest for a 2 Year fixed term agreement or it could be a secondment
  • Negotiable hours – You're the expert, tell us how you will make it work

Ensuring that the building regulatory system supports New Zealand's social and economic aspirations is a very big undertaking, but at MBIE challenges are what drives us. It's a place where you're encouraged and empowered to seize opportunities to make things better and to enhance the system.

The Building System Performance Branch (BSP) is the New Zealand Government's lead advisor on the building regulatory system and we want to be world-leading.

We saw the need to work in a more cross-system, collaborative way with the building sector and we are implementing a new structure and way of working to support us to do this.

Right now we have an opportunity for an engineering heavyweight to join the BSP leadership team and help lead us on a journey of business transformation, the kind that will be felt throughout the building industry and beyond.

As the Chief Engineer we will look to you to help strengthen relationships between industry and government, and provide a technical quality assurance role, particularly with regard to major investigations commissioned by MBIE into building or product failure.

It doesn't matter if you don't have government experience.  What we want is somebody who is passionate and future focused.  You will:

  • provide technical leadership and understanding of current engineering/compliance trends
  • ensure critical issues and trends are incorporated in the direction provided by MBIE looking to the future and forecasting building and construction trends.

Naturally, you need to be a highly experienced engineer.  We also want you to be:

  • Influential in the New Zealand and International building industry
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of regulatory frameworks and levers
  • Experienced working collaboratively across organisations and industries
  • Able to understand research practices in relation to the Building Sector
  • Have both a theoretical and practical understanding of the building industry

This is a rare opportunity to work in a role where you will influence and lead the building sector at the regulatory end.  Join us and help transform New Zealand's building regulatory system into a thing of international envy.
