Bring your expertise to our team and work alongside some of the best policy makers in Wellington, and play an important role in shaping the policy and laws that affect New Zealand individuals and businesses.

We are looking for smart, motivated Senor Advisor/Policy Advisors for a high performing team at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

Our team

The Health and Safety Policy team provides evidence-based policy and strategic advice to improve New Zealand's work health and safety and energy safety. This includes stewardship for the health and safety regulatory framework, notably the new Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and associated regulations, and the energy safety regulatory framework - ensuring these provide certainty and clarity and are proportionate and effective.

The government's Working Safer reforms aim to reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities at work by 25% by 2020. Our team sets the strategic direction for work health and safety with WorkSafe New Zealand, providing continuous impetus to improve health and safety outcomes and supporting more targeted and coordinated system-wide action. The team works closely with the other Labour Market policy teams in the Labour and Immigration Policy Branch by shaping the strategic direction for work health and safety's influence on the labour market. We also work closely with a wide range of other government agencies to maximise broader regulatory and government outcomes.

Why MBIE?

MBIE is the lead agency for making it easier for business to work with government.  MBIE's purpose is to grow the New Zealand economy to provide a better standard of living for all New Zealanders.

Developing our policy staff is a key focus for MBIE. MBIE operates in a high trust environment where policy staff are empowered to bring fresh perspectives to issues and to think outside the box. Being the largest policy shop in NZ, MBIE offers significant opportunity for leadership and developing broader policy experience across a broad variety of areas. We encourage excellence and proactively support development through on-the-job learning, training courses, conferences and seminars, development programmes, secondments, rotations to other branches and study opportunities.

What we're looking for:

  • Critical thinking and analytical skills to challenge the status quo
  • People who are energised by working with a wide range of stakeholders and partners, including Ministers
  • A ‘can do' attitude, and people wanting to take ownership of their work to deliver the best results
  • A desire to deepen your understanding of labour markets and skills and expertise in regulatory stewardship.
