Contribute to MBIE's goal of Growing New Zealand for all by promoting business innovation and competitiveness through the integration of domestic and international regulation, standards and rules

  • Work across Government and MBIE to achieve a more competitive and efficient trading environment
  • Work with a team of dedicated, experienced policy staff, and in a branch dealing with a number of major government priorities

 About the team

The Trade and Regulatory Cooperation team focuses on the impact of standards and regulations on the ability of businesses to trade and operate offshore, and how we can partner with foreign governments to reduce barriers to trade. To achieve this, we work closely with other parts of MBIE, the Treasury, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and regulators across government.

Our team's work includes policy development relating to the role of standards in innovation, and firms' engagement in international standards development and global value chains. We also have responsibility for New Zealand's import tariff and trade remedies regimes.

We are looking for a Principal Policy Advisor who will provide intellectual leadership and guidance to projects across the team, including:

  • the review of the NZ import tariff regime
  • shaping our priorities for negotiating and implementing technical barriers to trade and trade remedies chapters in a range of free trade agreements
  • reviewing NZ's conformity assessment infrastructure and the value it can provide to regulators and firms
  • assessing how NZ regulators and firms can have greater influence on international standards, and the role of government to support this
  • developing practical options for how standards and regulations can contribute to innovation in NZ.

We are looking for experienced senior policy professionals with:

  • extensive policy experience at a senior level
  • proven critical thinking, analytical skills and an enquiring mind
  • the ability to provide intellectual leadership and be a sounding board to help develop and drive a work programme
  • experience influencing a wide range of stakeholders, including Ministers, senior managers and international counterparts
  • a good understanding of regulatory instruments and international agreements
  • ability to obtain and maintain a confidential level security clearance
